Long before I had my baby, I had not imagined I would belong to a mothers group. Anyhow, now that I am a new mother, being able to talk to other women about what is happening in my life has benefited me immensely. We talk about how we deal with our children, what to do and not to do, we share baby food recipes, and we enjoy being able to discuss the latest baby fashions we have purchased.

I generally meet with 2 other mothers, once a fortnight, to hear about the latest happenings. We often meet at Sicily Pizzaria (which is in MENDOTA, IL) as that is quite central for all of us. Last month was more interesting seeing we talked about baby clothes. I have been providing my baby boy organic meals from day one but I had never thought about purchasing organic clothing for her.

Cotton is one of the most widely grown products in the US and one of the most ruinous to the habitat and to farm workers. The run off from these farms has damaged ecosystems and in particular water ways. Organic products are made without the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides. Alternatively, organic farming depends on things like crop rotation, raising the quality of soils naturally, and using organic pest control practices.

Benefits of Organic Baby Clothing

Buying organic products means you are purchasing produce which have been produced in an eco-friendly manner, or at a minimum in a way which causes less pollution of the environment. No or less use of pesticides and fertilizers means less pollution of our soils and waterways, fewer health problems for farmers, and fewer health risks for children by reducing their contact with potentially dangerous chemicals.

A number of producers of baby clothes also make a range of organic clothing or you can find designers solely committed to organic baby fashion. Thankfully, there are a lot of marks to choose from and all ages are provided for, from infants to teenagers. Of course, organic clothing for men and women is also obtainable and I am looking into that for myself and my man.

I would not go as far to say that I am only going to buy organic cotton or bamboo clothing (which is an excellent alternative to regular or organic cotton) for my child but I am most definitely going try to whenever I can.
