Back before I had my first child, I had not imagined I would join a mothers group. Anyhow, now that I am finally a mother, being able to talk to other mothers about what is going on in my life has been a huge help. We talk about how we raise our children, what to do and not to do, we share baby food recipes, and we like to talk about the latest baby clothes we have purchased.

I usually meet with 4 other parents, once a week, to catch up on the latest gossip. We often meet at Shalimar Restaurant (which is in ANN ARBOR, MI) as that is fairly central for all of us. Last week was really interesting seeing we talked about organic baby clothing. I have been feeding my baby organic meals from day one but it had never crossed my mind to purchasing organic clothing for her.

Cotton is one of the most popular products in the US and one of the most ruinous to the ecosystem and to farmers. The run off from non-organic cotton farms has damaged the environment and in particular water bodies. Organic cotton is grown without using artificial fertilisers and chemicals. Alternatively, organic farming relies on things like crop rotation, raising the quality of soils naturally, and using organic insect control methods.

Benefits of Organic Clothing

Purchasing organic produce means you are purchasing products which have been produced in an eco-friendly manner, or at least in a way which causes less pollution of our habitat. No or reduced use of herbicides and fertilisers means less pollution of our soils and waterways, reduced health problems for farm employees, and fewer health risks for our babies and children by reducing their contact with dangerous chemicals.

Several makers of baby clothes also produce a range of organic items or you can find companies entirely devoted to organic baby clothes. Thankfully, there are a lot of marks to choose from and all ages are provided for, from babies to adolescents. Naturally, organic fashion for men and women is also obtainable and I am looking into that for myself and my man.

I am not saying that I am only ever going to purchase organic cotton or bamboo clothes (which is a good alternative to regular or organic cotton) for my children but I am without a doubt going try to whenever possible.
