Before I had my baby, I never believed I would be part of a mothers group. Anyhow, now that I have become a mum, being able to talk to other parents about what is taking place in my life has been a huge help. We chat about how we deal with our children, what to do and not to do, we share baby food recipes, and we like to talk about the newest baby clothes we have bought.

I generally get together with 3 other mothers, once a week, to find out the latest happenings. We usually meet at Bill Miller Bar-B-Q (which is in AUSTIN, TX) as that is quite central for all of us. Last week was particularly eye opening as we talked about organic baby clothes. I have been providing my baby girl organic produce from the start but it had never crossed my mind to getting organic clothing for her.

Cotton is one of the most widely grown crops in America and one of the most harmful to the ecosystem and to farm employees. The run off from cotton farms has destroyed habitats and in particular water bodies. Organic cotton is grown without the need for artificial fertilisers and insecticides. Alternatively, organic farming depends on things like crop rotation, improving soils naturally, and using organic pest control techniques.

Benefits of Organic Clothing

Purchasing organic clothes means you are buying products which have been produced in an eco-friendly manner, or at a minimum in a way which causes less pollution of our habitat. No or reduced use of insecticides and synthetic fertilisers means less pollution of our land and rivers, reduced health problems for farm workers, and fewer health risks for children by reducing their contact with potentially dangerous chemicals.

A number of makers of baby clothes also sell a range of organic clothes or you can find designers solely committed to organic baby clothing. Thankfully, there are a lot of marks to choose from and all ages are taken care of, from babies to teenagers. Naturally, organic clothing for men and women is also obtainable and I am looking into that for myself and my man.

I do not think that I am only going to buy organic cotton or bamboo clothes (which is an amazing alternative to regular or organic cotton) for my children but I am definitely going try to whenever I can.
