Before I had my baby, I never really imagined I would belong to a mothers group. Anyhow, now that I have become a mother, being able to talk to other mothers about what is going on in my life has been a huge help. We chat about how we bring up our children, what to do and not to do, we share baby food recipes, and we enjoy being able to discuss the most recent baby fashions we have picked up.
I generally get together with 2 other parents, once a fortnight, to catch up on the latest happenings. We often meet at Crushed Grape Wine & Gifts (which is in SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA) as that is fairly central for all of us. Last month was particularly exciting seeing we talked about baby clothes. I have been giving my baby organic produce from day one but I had never thought about getting organic clothing for her.
Cotton is one of the most broadly grown plants in America and one of the most harmful to the habitat and to farm employees. The run off from non-organic cotton farms has damaged ecosystems and particularly water supplies. Organic produce is produced without the use of artificial fertilisers and chemicals. Alternatively, organic farming relies on things like crop rotation, raising the quality of soils naturally, and using eco friendly pest control techniques.

Benefits of Organic Clothing
Getting organic produce means you are purchasing clothes which have been produced in an eco-friendly manner, or at the very least in a way which causes less contamination of soils and waterways. No or reduced use of pesticides and synthetic fertilisers means less pollution of our soils and rivers, reduced diseases for farm workers, and fewer health risks for our babies and children by lessening their contact with toxic chemicals.
Many makers of baby clothes also make a range of organic clothing or you can find companies completely committed to organic baby clothes. Thankfully, there are a lot of designs to choose from and all ages are taken care of, from infants to adolescents. Naturally, organic clothing for men and women is also obtainable and I am looking into that for myself and my husband.
I do not think that I am only ever going to buy organic cotton or bamboo clothing (which is an amazing alternative to regular or organic cotton) for my baby but I am without a doubt going try to whenever it is available.
