Long before I had my first child, I never believed I would be part of a mothers group. Anyhow, now that I am a mother, chatting to other women about what is taking place in my life has benefited me immensely. We discuss how we deal with our children, what to do and not to do, we share recipes, and we like to chat about the newest baby fashions we have picked up.

I usually get together with 3 other mothers, once a week, to catch up on the latest happenings. We generally meet at Applewood Inn & Restaurant (which is in GUERNEVILLE, CA) as that is fairly central for all of us. Last month was really exciting because we chatted about organic baby clothing. I have been giving my baby boy organic meals from the start but I had not considered buying organic clothing for her.

Cotton is one of the most widely grown products in America and one of the most devastating to the ecosystem and to farm workers. The run off from these farms has damaged ecosystems and in particular water supplies. Organic produce is made without the need for artificial fertilisers and pesticides. Rather, organic farming depends on things like crop rotation, raising the quality of soils naturally, and using organic insect control techniques.

Benefits of Organic Clothing

Getting organic clothes means you are purchasing clothes which have been produced in an eco friendly manner, or at a minimum in a way which causes less contamination of soils and waterways. No or reduced use of pesticides and fertilizers means less pollution of our land and rivers, fewer diseases for farm employees, and fewer health risks for our babies and children by reducing their contact with dangerous chemicals.

Many producers of baby clothes also produce a range of organic clothes or you can find companies solely devoted to organic baby clothing. Anyway, there are a lot of marks to choose from and all ages are catered for, from toddlers to teenagers. Of course, organic clothing for men and women is also obtainable and I am looking into that for myself and my partner.

I do not think that I am just going to buy organic cotton or bamboo clothing (which is a great alternative to regular or organic cotton) for my child but I am without a doubt going try to whenever possible.
