Long before I had my baby, I had not imagined I would be part of a mothers group. Anyhow, now that I am finally a new mother, chatting to other parents about what is going on in my life has really helped me. We chat about how we bring up our children, what to do and not to do, we share recipes, and we love to chat about the most recent baby fashions we have picked up.

I usually go out with 4 other parents, once a fortnight, to catch up on the latest happenings. We often meet at Singha Thai Restaurant (which is in CHICAGO, IL) as that is pretty central for all of us. Last time was really eye opening as we chatted about baby clothes. I have been providing my baby girl organic meals from day one but I had never thought about getting organic clothing for her.

Cotton is one of the most popular plants in the US and one of the most harmful to the environment and to farm workers. The run off from cotton farms has damaged the environment and in particular water supplies. Organic produce is produced without the use of artificial fertilisers and pesticides. Instead, organic farming depends on things like crop rotation, enhancing soils naturally, and using eco friendly pest control practices.

Benefits of Organic Clothing

Purchasing organic produce means you are getting clothes which have been produced in an environmentally friendly manner, or at least in a way which causes less contamination of soils and waterways. No or a reduction in the use of insecticides and synthetic fertilisers means less pollution of our land and rivers, less health problems for farm employees, and fewer health risks for children by lessening their contact with toxic chemicals.

Several makers of baby clothes also sell a range of organic clothing or you can find companies completely committed to organic baby clothes. Thankfully, there are a lot of marks to choose from and all ages are provided for, from infants to teenagers. Obviously, organic fashion for men and women is also available and I am looking into that for myself and my man.

I would not go as far to say that I am only going to buy organic cotton or bamboo clothing (which is an excellent alternative to regular or organic cotton) for my child but I am without a doubt going try to whenever it is available.
